What to Expect

A breast augmentation, which is clinically referred to as an augmentation mammaplasty, increases breast size with the use of either saline or silicone breast implants, or even fat grafting. During your consultation, Dr. Kay will discuss with you the benefits of each so you can make an informed decision about which choice of implant is right for you.

Types of Breast Implants

• Saline breast implants are ideal for women with naturally fuller breasts and offer a less expensive alternative to silicone implants.
• Silicone gel implants have a very natural look and feel, and are lighter than their saline counterparts.
• Fat grafting may be desirable in selected augmentations to provide a softer, more natural result if breast tissue is thin.

Incision Options

During surgery, Dr. Kay will make an incision in the bottom crease in the breast, near the armpit or around the edge of the areola. Dr. Kay bases incision placement on your individual needs and preferences as well as the type of implant you have selected.

After creating the incision, Dr. Kay will then create a pocket where the implant will be placed. This pocket may be just underneath the breast tissue (sub glandular placement), or underneath the breast tissue and underlying pectoral muscle (submuscular placement). Like incision position, implant placement is chosen based on a variety of different factors.

Combining Procedures

In some cases, Dr. Kay may recommend including a breast lift with your implants. A combined breast augmentation with lift can not only increase bust size but also raises saggy or drooping breasts to a higher placement.

Your Recovery & Results

You should notice an immediate difference in your breasts following surgery although the final results may take several months to become fully apparent. Dr. Kay may ask you to wear a compression garment, elastic bandage or a special bra to support your augmented breasts and minimize swelling during the early stages of your recovery. You should be able to return to your normal work and activities after 5-7 days. You will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions to help your breasts heal with beautiful results.

By about 6 months after your breast augmentation, your implants should be in their final and permanent position.
