Environmental factors, age and genetics can all contribute to the look of sagging, droopy eyelid skin that can make men look tired or prematurely aged. Men with pronounced bags under the eyes or excess skin through the upper or lower eyelids can enjoy a rejuvenated appearance again after eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty. Sometimes referred to as an eyelid lift, eyelid surgery can not only help men look younger, but may also remove vision obstruction related to excess eyelid skin.

Dr. Stephen Kay is a board certified plastic surgeon serving the Bethesda – Chevy Chase metro area who has helped many men feel better about their appearance with eyelid surgery. In addition to blepharoplasty for men, Dr. Kay offers a full range of cosmetic surgery procedures for both men and women throughout the greater Washington D.C. region and beyond.

Is Male Eyelid Surgery Right for You?

The best candidates for male eyelid surgery are men who are troubled by puffy under-eye bags and/or loose skin in the upper eyelids. Men of Asian heritage may also consider eyelid surgery to add a crease to their upper lids.

Male eyelid surgery can:

  • Restore a younger look throughout the eye area
  • Eliminate puffy bags below the eyes
  • Improve the appearance of sagginess and wrinkles around the upper or lower eyelids
  • Add an upper eyelid crease to ethnic eyes
  • Help you look more refreshed and alert

Male Eyelid Surgery Costs

The costs associated with male eyelid surgery will vary depending on which type of blepharoplasty Dr. Kay recommends and whether additional procedures are performed at the same time. The total charges of your procedure will include Dr. Kay’s surgical fee, the use of the surgical facility, and anesthesiologist fees.

If vision obstruction is the primary reason for pursuing eyelid surgery, some insurance providers may cover a portion or all of the costs for your procedure. Dr. Kay and his staff are also happy to discuss cosmetic surgery financing options that can help make your eyelid surgery even more affordable.

What to Expect

Eyelid surgery can enhance your entire appearance by reducing puffiness and excess skin, and may even improve vision for some men. Either the upper or lower eyelids can be addressed during surgery, although it’s not uncommon to opt for surgery in both.

  • Upper eyelid surgery removes saggy skin from the upper lids. Dr. Kay places the incision for upper blepharoplasty discreetly in the natural eyelid crease.
  • During lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Kay hides the incision within the lower lash line, although he may make an incision inside the lower lid instead. With either option, Dr. Kay can then remove fatty tissue to reduce bags below the eyes.
  • When adding a crease to Asian eyes during double eyelid surgery, Dr. Kay creates a new crease from the existing eyelid, removing the epicanthic fold to uncover the inner corner of the eye for a look that is still ethnic, yet more rounded.

Dr. Kay will discuss your blepharoplasty options in more detail with you during your consultation, as well as talk about your personal hopes for surgery. In some cases, Dr. Kay may recommend additional procedures to better meet your goals, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to erase crow’s feet at the outer corners of your eyes, or a brow lift to lift a fallen forehead. Sometimes, men may include eyelid surgery as part of a male facelift for more comprehensive results.

Your Recovery & Results

Right after your blepharoplasty, you may see some swelling, yet should still notice a difference in the eye area. Swelling should decrease rapidly within the first two days after your blepharoplasty, and most men are able to return to work and a normal routine soon after surgery.

Eyelid surgery creates a smoother, younger look to the skin around the eyes accompanied by a slight lift to the lids. Under-eye bags should be improved or eliminated, helping you look more rested and refreshed.
