Chemical Peels

No matter how committed you are to an over-the-counter skincare regimen, drugstore and department store products can’t deliver the same quality of replenishment and nourishment as med spa treatments. Incorporating chemical peels into your existing skincare routine can even out your skin tone, improve your skin’s texture and help your complexion look younger and more radiant.

Dr. Stephen Kay is known as one of the best plastic surgeons serving the Bethesda-Chevy Chase metro area. In addition to helping thousands of women and men throughout Washington D.C. and beyond with nonsurgical medical spa treatments like chemical peels, Dr. Kay also offers a full range of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures for both face and body.

Are Chemical Peels Right for You?

The best candidates for chemical peels have complexion issues that they’d like improved, such as uneven skin tone (age spots or melasma, for example), too-visible pores, rough skin texture or fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels can also help clear up existing blemishes as part of a comprehensive acne treatment plan, help minimize minor facial scarring and imperfections and restore balance to your complexion.

Chemical peels can:

  • Fade freckles and age spots
  • Minimize fine lines and early wrinkles
  • Even out rough skin texture
  • Help your complexion look more luminous
  • Work in combination with other skin rejuvenation treatments for even better results
  • Keep the signs of aging at bay for longer

Chemical Peel Costs

The costs associated with your chemical can vary depending on which type of peel Dr. Kay recommends as well as whether additional treatments are performed in the same appointment. Your total costs will include Dr. Kay’s fee and the cost of the peel itself. Since chemical peels are performed as outpatient procedures that don’t require anesthesia or a surgical facility, your total costs are very low compared to facial cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Kay and his staff will go over all the available options for cosmetic surgery financing that can help make your med spa treatments even more affordable.

What to Expect

Chemical peels come in a variety of strengths and different formulations, and can be customized to your specific complexion concerns on the face, neck, hands or décolletage. Many women and men schedule regular chemical peels to enjoy the benefits that ongoing medical-grade skincare can offer their appearance.

At your consultation, Dr. Kay will discuss your hopes for treatment with you so he can design a plan that will help you meet your cosmetic goals. Chemical peels are often combined with other medical spa treatments like BOTOX® or other injectables, but can also enhance the results of cosmetic surgery such as a facelift or eyelid surgery.

During your appointment, Dr. Kay will first clean your skin before applying the chemical solution, which is typically acid-based. The chemical reaction creates a controlled, mild wound to the skin’s surface that removes damaged skin cells and promotes restoration and renewal. Most people feel a hot or burning sensation that lasts a few minutes, while very deep peels may feel more intense.

After the peel is removed, your skin may feel sensitive at first, often with a reaction that looks similar to sunburn. The treated skin flakes away over the next few days to reveal fresh, healthy skin below. Very mild peels can be repeated as frequently as once a week or once per month, while deep peels may only require a single treatment annually.

Your Recovery & Results

  1. The peeling stage of your recovery can last up to a week, after which you should see visible improvement in your skin. Depending on the strength of your peel, Dr. Kay may recommend one or more follow-up treatments for more comprehensive results, although even a single appointment for a mild chemical peel can often create a marked improvement in your appearance.
  2. After your chemical peel, your complexion should look more evenly toned, have a smoother texture and a healthier glow. Fine lines and wrinkles are often less noticeable, and pore size should appear minimized. Chemical peels offer a simple, affordable way to enjoy a more youthful appearance and healthier skin without surgery.
